On Friday, December 9, the Bahrain Round Table held its Bahrain Marathon Relay, an annual for-charity event that each year raises thousands of dinars for charitable causes in Bahrain.
For the third year in a row, the American Studies Center was the only organization among the 140+ teams from all segments of the Bahrain community to represent the University of Bahrain in this worthy event. Once again, the team was grateful to accept the sponsorship of Security and Investment Company (SICO), which generously donated registration fees as well as money for transportation and logo-emblazoned t-shirts.
As usual, the team was made up of 16 members including current students in the Center, alumni, and friends. Sahresh Shahzad, ASC student and team coordinator, assigned every participant one of the the 16 legs of the course, each a distance of approximately 3 kilometers , starting from the Bahrain International Circuit, running past the University and Awali, winding into the desert around Jebel Duqan, and back to the BIC.
Unfortunately, Dr. John Hillis, ASC Director, was not able to run as he had in the past two years. However, he gave the team a rousing send-off and was there to greet them and celebrate as they completed the circuit and award the runners with medals that are given to all teams upon completing the marathon. Women have always competed in past years, but this time half the the team consisted of female students, all of whom performed brilliantly. Fortunately, there were no mishaps and the relay was a resounding success.
Non-athletes discovered that 3 kilometers was longer than they had anticipated, but managed gamely to complete their assigned sections even if it meant slowing down to a walk! The point was not to win, of course, but to represent the University of Bahrain and the American Studies Center in a very worthy charitable cause, as well as to have fun being good citizens and contributing to the Bahraini community.
Special thanks are due to the sponsor, SICO, Sahresh Shahzad and her organizing team, and all the participants who enthusiastically donated their time and effort. The American Studies Center is proud once again to have been a part of the Bahrain Round Table’s annual Marathon Relay and hopes to participate again next year.
